Former Portland Pilots women’s soccer stand-outs Megan Rapinoe, Christine Sinclair and Sophie Schmidt took center stage at the 2012 London Olympics once again on Thursday as Rapinoe and the US won the gold medal game, and Sinclair and Schmidt helped Canada claim the bronze.
2012 marked the Olympics debut in the storied career of Rapinoe, while its Canada’s first ever Olympic medal in women’s soccer.
Rapinoe, who had three goals and three assists during the Olympic games, started in the midfield on Friday as the Americans looked to avenge a loss to Japan in the 2011 World Cup Final. The US jumped out to a 2-0 lead, courtesy a pair of goals from Carli Lloyd, before holding on for a 2-1 win in front of a crowd of 80,203 at the famed Wembley Stadium in London, England.
It’s the American’s third straight gold medal and fourth overall in women’s soccer at the Olympic Games.
Earlier in the day, Canada blanked France 1-0 behind the game-winning goal scored by Diana Matheson during stoppage time. Sinclair had a stellar Olympic games, which included registering a hat trick during Monday’s epic semifinal match against the USA. Sinclair now has 143 career international goals, which is just 15 goals shy of Mia Hamm’s all-time record of 158.
Approximately 350 people joined the current UP women’s soccer team at a watch party held on the University of Portland campus during the gold medal game.
UP used the watch party to announce a special ticket deal for the upcoming 2012 women’s soccer season, which kicks off with a home game against 20-time national champion North Carolina on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
The “Podium Pack” offer includes tickets to both the UNC game and a home match against national power Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 7. The deal is $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under.
UP, UNC and Notre Dame have combined to win 25 NCAA championships, and all three teams annually send numerous players to national teams for international competitions. Each school had three alums playing at the 2012 London Olympics, so this is your opportunity to see the next generational of international stars in action today!
