Saint Mary’s Deals Pilots Home Loss
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Defending West Coast Conference champions Saint Mary’s defeated the Portland Pilots 60-38 Saturday night before 2,625 fans at the Chiles Center. Stephen Holt led three Gaels players in double figures with 13 points, while reigning WCC Player of the Year Matthew Dellavedova added 11 points and six assists.
Kevin Bailey, Thomas van der Mars and Oskars Reinfelds led the Pilots (8-12, 1-4 WCC) with seven points each.
Brad Waldow added 12 points for the visiting Gaels (15-4, 4-1), who won on the road for the second time this week after defeating BYU on a Wednesday 35-foot buzzer-beater by Dellavedova.
The 38 points scored for Portland was the fewest since the Pilots dropped a 53-31 decision to San Diego in 1989.
Portland shot a season-low 23 percent from the field, finishing 10-for-43 overall, and committed 18 turnovers which led to 21 points for the Gaels.
Back-to-back Saint Mary’s three-pointers by Mitchell Young and Jorden Page gave the Gaels a 23-9 lead with 5:00 remaining in the first half. Reinfelds buried a three-pointer and five straight points by Ryan Nicholas pulled Portland within 25-17. Bailey ended the period with a steal and dunk to make it 29-19.
A van der Mars jumper cut the deficit to 33-24, but a Waldow dunk pushed the margin back to double figures and the Pilots would get no closer than 12 points down the stretch.
Portland will look to re-group as the homestand continues on Thursday when the San Francisco Dons visit the Chiles Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be aired live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. The BYU Cougars visit on Saturday, Jan. 26 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on ESPNU.
