Bailey Drops 22 as Pilots Rout San Jose State
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior guard Kevin Bailey scored 22 points and senior forward Ryan Nicholas added 11 points and 14 rebounds as the Portland Pilots ran away from the San Jose State Spartans 86-69 Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. Portland scored 49 second half points and had 19 assists with just nine turnovers in the win.
Bailey had it going early and often for the Pilots (4-3) hitting all three of his first half three-point attempts and scoring 11 points before the break to give the home team a 37-33 halftime lead.
Portland would immediately grow the lead to double digits early in the second half capped by a Nicholas three-pointer. The margin grew to as much as 21 points late in regulation as the Pilots shot 63 percent from the field in the second period.
Bailey was an efficient 9-for-13 from the field and also grabbed five rebounds. Nicholas followed a 15-point, 16-rebound effort on Saturday night with his third double-double of the season on Wednesday.
Junior center Thomas van der Mars reached double figures for the fourth consecutive game and finished with 11 points and three steals. Freshman point guard Alec Wintering also had a nice outing with 10 points, three rebounds and five assists.
The Spartans (2-5) came into the game among the national leaders in both three-pointers made and attempted. SJSU finished 8-for-22 from beyond the arc, but had just eight assists and 14 turnovers.
Freshman guard Rashad Muhammad recorded a season-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 4-of-5 from three-point range. Jaleel Williams added 11 points as the Spartans' two-game win streak came to an end.
Portland will take Thanksgiving off and then return to practice in preparation for Sunday afternoon's game against Southern Utah (1-3). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip-off and will be on the radio on Sports 910.
