PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Ellen Parker netted the game-winner and the No. 12 Pilots claimed a share of their 13th West Coast Conference Championship by defeating the San Francisco Dons 1-0 in the regular season finale played on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Merlo Field. It's the first conference title since 2010 for the Pilots, who finished on top of the league standings tied with Santa Clara and BYU.
Â
After a scoreless first half, the Pilots (16-2-1, 8-1-0 WCC) turned up the pressure after the break, peppering the USF frame with eight second-half shots. After a couple of quality chances, it was Parker who buried a shot in the 68th minute on a tremendous pass from Allison Wetherington.
Â
Wetherington, a freshman, sent a beautiful right-footed chip across the face of the goal towards the far post, where Parker timed her run perfectly, took a touch and cracked a shot into the top shelf for her seventh goal of the season.
Â
The 1-0 lead would stand, allowing Parker to secure her seventh game-winner of the season. Every goal scored by the midfielder this season has been a game-winner.
Â
The Portland defense held the Dons to just one shot in the second half and to three shots total on the afternoon. UP senior goalkeeper Erin Dees made a nice save in the first half, and she combined with fellow senior keeper Nichole Downing to record the Pilots' eighth blank sheet of the season.
Â
Five of Portland's 11 shots were on-target and senior forward Micaela Capelle led the way with four shots.
Â
USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel finished with four saves.
Â
The game marked the final regular season appearance at Merlo Field for Portland's eight seniors. Parker, Dees, Capelle, Downing, Sarah Bridges, Kaila Cameli, Michelle Cruz and Amanda Frisbie were honored with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
It's the second WCC title for this group after running through the conference unbeaten during their freshman season. The group has also reached the second round of the NCAA Playoffs all three years, compiling 55 wins along the way.
Â
The Pilots will next learn their playoff fate on Monday during the NCAA Playoff selection show, which is scheduled to be broadcast online at 1:30 p.m. Portland fans are invited to watch the selection show with the team in the Hall of Fame Room, which is located inside the Chiles Center on the UP campus.
