PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland has hired former MLS goalkeeper Adin Brown as an assistant coach, announced Associate Director of Soccer Garrett Smith. Brown joins the staff as a full-time goalkeeper coach and his primary responsibilities will be with the women's team.
"It's an honor to join a program with such a prestigious history," Brown said. "I'm looking forward to contributing to the tradition of success here at the University of Portland."
Â
"We are really excited to have Adin join our program and we're very fortunate to have somebody with his multiple levels of accomplishments," said Smith. "His successful career covers all levels of the game and I know Adin is as equally excited in his search of his first ever collegiate national championship. He wants to help us get there."
Â
A three-time All-American at William & Mary, Brown began his 13-year professional playing career with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in 2000 when he was the No. 3 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Brown also spent time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, helping guide the Revolution to the MLS Cup final in 2002.
Â
He would then head to Norway for a four-year stint (2005-09) with Aalesund FK, appearing in 69 matches and helping the club make its return the country's premier league in 2007. Brown was voted one of the 50 best foreign players to ever play in Norway.
Â
Brown then returned to the United States to join the Portland Timbers, who then played in the USSF Division 2 Professional League. Brown spent two years with the Timbers, which included starting their inaugural MLS match in 2011.
Â
Brown has been an analyst on the Timbers' radio broadcast team for the past two seasons and he has served as one of the organization's Alumni Ambassadors since 2012.
Â
Originally from Pleasant Hill, Calif., Brown also has experience with the U.S. National Team and he played for Clive Charles on the U.S. U-23 National Team from 1997 until 2000.
Â
"Clive taught me from the very beginning to strive for the best, not only on the field but off the field as well," said Brown, who has been the Director of Goalkeeping at FC Portland since June of 2012. "I can see that tradition has continued with Garrett and Bill (Irwin) at the helm. I'm looking forward to working with both of them, the rest of the staff and the elite student-athletes throughout the program to achieve our goals of winning a WCC title and ultimately a national championship."
