Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The San Diego Toreros scored twice in the first half before adding a goal late to claim a 3-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference game at Torero Stadium on Sunday. The loss evens Portland's (5-7-2) record at 2-2 in the conference.
After trailing 2-0 at the break, the Pilots dominated possession early in the second half and the ball remained exclusively in the San Diego half of the field for the majority of the first 20 minutes. Kaycie Young hit a shot high in the 57th minute, and Parkes Kendrick did the same moments later.
The Pilots continued to get forward and send balls into the area, but were ultimately unable to connect with a final touch.
San Diego (5-6-2, 1-2-0 WCC) then scored late as Nikki Pappalardo found herself in a 1-v-1 opportunity in the 88th minute. Pappalardo slotted a pass to Camelia Tirandazi, who easily tapped it in to give the Toreros a three-goal cushion.
The Pilots looked good in possession and created a handful of opportunities throughout the first half, earning seven corners during the first 45 minutes.
But it was the Toreros who found the back of the net, with the first goal coming on a deflected shot in the 30th minute. Jacqueline Altschuld gained possession in the center of the field, took a couple of touches and hit a shot that deflected out of the reach of Portland goalkeeper Hanna de Haan from about 20 yards outs.
The second goal came just three minutes later when Julia Sherwood elevated near the left post on a corner and re-directed the ball into the net with a header. Sherwood's third goal of the season allowed the Toreros to take the 2-nil lead into the locker room at half, despite Portland continuing to pressure the San Diego final third.
De Haan finished with five saves, which included a stellar stop after a scramble in the box mid-way through the second half.
The Pilots next take a break from action and don't play again until they host the Pepperdine Waves on Friday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
