Portland honored seniors Rebekah Kurle, Lorielle McCluskie
and Emily Sippel with a pre-game ceremonyPORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Noelle La Prevotte broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 56th minute and the Pilots celebrated senior day with a 1-0 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. It's the third goal this season for La Prevotte and it's her first game-winner.
After 55 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Allison Wetherington set-up the La Prevotte goal when she had possession and was able to get around the LMU back line near the right post. Her ball across the box then found the foot of La Prevotte, who had her initial shot blocked. But the junior midfielder stayed composed and buried the rebound to hand the Pilots a 1-0 lead.
It was a lead they would hold onto as the Pilots (6-8-2, 3-3-0 WCC) dominated possession during the second half and did well to limit LMU's (9-6-2, 2-4-1 WCC) chances. Portland out-shot LMU 13-4 during the final 35 minutes and claimed a 16-9 overall advantage in attempts.
La Prevotte was active all afternoon, finishing with a team-high seven shots. She had a shot saved early in the second half and a defender cleared another La Prevotte shot off the goal line in the final minute. Sophomore Danica Evans and Rebekah Kurle also had well-hit shots saved by LMU goalkeeper Sophia Leksan, who finished with four stops on the afternoon.
Portland sophomore goalkeeper Hanna de Haan was solid in goal, also registering four saves, and she claims her first career shutout. She made a pair of saves in the first half to help keep the game scoreless.
The game marked the final regular season appearance at Merlo Field for Portland's three seniors. Kurle, Emily Sippel and Lorielle McCluskie, who has seen limited time this season due to an injury, were honored with a pre-game ceremony. McCluskie was inserted into the game during the final three minutes and both Kurle and Sippel played a big role in Portland's second-half dominance.
The Pilots next finish the regular season with three straight road games, beginning with a match against the San Francisco Dons in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday night. Kickoff at Negoesco Field is set for 7 p.m.
