THIS WEEK • The Pilots begin their three-game road stretch to end the regular season with a pair of West Coast Conference match-ups in the Bay Area this weekend.
• First on Friday night, the Pilots will face the San Francisco Dons at 7 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium in a game that will be streamed live on TheW.tv.
• Sunday's game with long-time league rival Santa Clara begins at 2 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium and will be broadcast live nationally on ESPNU, which is channel 727 on Comcast in the Portland area.
• The Portland-Santa Clara match can also be seen using WatchESPN.
• The next win for Portland head coach Garrett Smith will be career win No. 200.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots dropped a close 1-0 decision to No. 11 Pepperdine on Friday night before bouncing back for a 1-0 win over LMU on Sunday at Merlo Field.
• The Pilots had their chances against the Waves and senior Emily Sippel nearly tallied the equalizer, but her shot in the 87th minute was wide of the right post by mere inches; sophomore goalkeeper Hanna de Haan recorded a remarkable 15 saves.
• Portland dominated possession against the Lions and Noelle La Prevotte scored the game-winner in the 56th minute; the Pilots out-shot LMU 13-4 in the second half and de Haan notched her first career shutout.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Reigning WCC Coach of the Year Garrett Smith is just one win shy of career win No. 200.
• Smith, who played for the Pilots and graduated from UP in 1991, is in his 12th year as head coach and he's compiled an overall career mark of 199-46-19 (.790), while going a remarkable 68-12-7 (.829) in the WCC.
• Portland's win over Miami on Sept. 12 was the 500th victory in program history; Portland began competing at the NAIA level in 1980, moved up to NCAA Division I in 1986 and has an overall record of 503-158-53 (.742).
• The Pilots have regularly started a line-up that features eight freshmen and sophomores and only three upperclassmen.
• The Pilots began the season in the top-15 of all three major polls.
• The Pilots have faced two top-five opponents this season, traveling to then-No. 2 Florida State on Aug. 22 and hosting then-No. 5 Stanford on Aug. 30.
• Currently, six of Portland's 2014 opponents are ranked in the NSCAA poll, with two other opponents receiving votes.
• Sophomore Danica Evans leads the team with seven goals, four game-winners and 16 points.
• 12 different players have accounted for Portland's 17 assists; Ellie Boon, Danica Evans, Parkes Kendrick, Allison Wetherington and Kaycie Young each have a team-best two assists.
• 4,847 fans attended Portland's match vs. Stanford on Aug. 30, and a record 2,503 students were in attendance; 2,503 students represents a remarkable 63% of the entire UP student body, and the overall crowd was the 15th largest in program history.
• The Pilots received three first-place votes and just missed being picked as the favorite to win the always challenging West Coast Conference.
• The Pilots placed a league-high three players on the All-WCC Preseason Team as sophomores Ellie Boon, Danica Evans and Allison Wetherington were each selected.
• Portland claimed the program's 13th WCC title last season after sharing the league crown with BYU and Santa Clara.
• Portland's roster features a heralded sophomore class that was ranked fifth in the nation entering UP as freshmen last fall; midfielder Allison Wetherington was named the 2013 WCC Freshman of the Year, while Ellie Boon (All-WCC Honorable Mention), Danica Evans (All-WCC Honorable Mention) and Ariel Viera (WCC All-Freshman Team) also garnered all-league recognition.
• The Pilots have led the nation in attendance for nine straight years; UP set a then-NCAA record for attendance in a season when 47,082 fans attended Portland women's soccer games in 2008.
• The Pilots have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA playoffs for 14 straight seasons and have reached the playoffs during 21 of the last 22 years.
• Portland won the NCAA National Championship in 2002 and in 2005.
• Garrett Smith has been named the league's top coach six times.
