Video HighlightsPORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sophomore Danica Evans scored twice and fellow sophomore Allison Wetherington added a goal as the Pilots shutout the Pacific Tigers 3-0 in the West Coast Conference opener on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots (4-5-2, 1-0-0 WCC) limited Pacific (2-8-1, 0-1-0 WCC) to just a pair of shots on the night, and goalkeepers Taylor Luty and Hanna de Haan combined to register Portland's third clean sheet on the year.
Portland dominated possession from the opening whistle and Evans began the scoring with a goal in the 18th minute. On a scramble in the box, junior Noelle La Prevotte sent a short pass to Evans, who did well under heavy pressure to get a touch on the ball and sneak a shot just under Pacific keeper Melissa Ma. La Prevotte tallies her first assist on the year and the Pilots would take the 1-0 lead into the locker room at half.
The Pilots continued their dominance on the ball in the second half and Evans notched her team-best sixth goal of the season in the 59th minute. This time it was off a stellar flick from sophomore Devlyn Jeter on a corner sent in by freshman Kaycie Young. Evans was in the right place at the right time to knock in the re-direction and put the Pilots up 2-0.
Young picks up her second assist on the season and Jeter becomes the 11th Portland player to notch an assist this year.
Then in the 71st minute, Evans nearly made it a hat trick when she was on the receiving on a perfect ball from Wetherington. Wetherington sent a curling, perfectly weighted ball that settled just in front of Evans inside the 18-yard box. Evans took a touch before drilling a shot off the post.
And moments later it was Wetherington who gave Portland a three-goal advantage with her second goal of the fall. Off a rebound on a shot from Parkes Kendrick, Wetherington sent a well-hit ball towards the frame, and it took a slight deflection off a Pacific defender before ending up in the back of the net.
Kendrick takes the assist, and the Pilots take home the shutout win.
The Pilots next remain at home to host the Saint Mary's Gaels for a WCC match on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Merlo Field, and the game will be preceded by a Portland men's game against Pacific at noon.
