THIS WEEK • The Pilots face a challenging road trip this week as they travel to Brigham Young and San Diego for a pair of key West Coast Conference games.
• First the Pilots will be in Provo, Utah, on Thursday night for a 5 p.m. (Pacific) match against the No. 23 BYU Cougars at South Field; the game will be broadcast live on BYUtv, which is channel 234 on Comcast in the Portland area.
• The Pilots then travel to San Diego, Calif., to face the San Diego Toreros on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Torero Stadium; that contest will be streamed live on TheW.tv.
LAST WEEK • Portland opened 2-0 in the WCC after a pair of wins last weekend at Merlo Field.
• On Friday, sophomore Danica Evans scored twice and Allison Wetherington added a third goal as the Pilots blanked Pacific 3-0.
• The Pilots held the Tigers to just two shots in recording their third shutout of the year.
• On Sunday, the Pilots scored twice in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat the Saint Mary's Gaels 2-1.
• Noelle La Prevotte scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute and Evans notched the game-winner in the 77th minute.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Reigning WCC Coach of the Year Garrett Smith is just two wins shy of career win No. 200.
• Smith, who played for the Pilots and graduated from UP in 1991, is in his 12th year as head coach and he's compiled an overall career mark of 198-43-19 (.798), while going a remarkable 67-9-7 (.849) record in the WCC.
• Portland's win over Miami on Sept. 12 was the 500th victory in program history; Portland began competing at the NAIA level in 1980, moved up to NCAA Division I in 1986 and has an overall record of 502-156-52 (.744).
• The Pilots have regularly started a line-up that features eight freshmen and sophomores and only three upperclassmen.
• The Pilots began the season in the top-15 of all three major polls.
• The Pilots have faced two top-five opponents this season, traveling to then-No. 2 Florida State on Aug. 22 and hosting then-No. 5 Stanford on Aug. 30.
• Currently, five of Portland's 2014 opponents are ranked in the NSCAA poll, with three others receiving votes.
• Sophomore Danica Evans leads the team with seven goals, four game-winners and 16 points; she ranks second in the WCC in game-winners and is fourth in both goals and points.
• 12 different players have accounted for Portland's 16 assists; Ellie Boon, Evans, Parkes Kendrick and Kaycie Young each have a team-best two assists.
• 4,847 fans attended Portland's match vs. Stanford on Aug. 30, and a record 2,503 students were in attendance; 2,503 students represents a remarkable 63% of the entire UP student body, and the overall crowd was the 15th largest in program history.
• The Pilots received three first-place votes and just missed being picked as the favorite to win the always challenging West Coast Conference.
• The Pilots placed a league-high three players on the All-WCC Preseason Team as sophomores Ellie Boon, Danica Evans and Allison Wetherington were each selected.
• Portland claimed the program's 13th WCC title last season after sharing the league crown with BYU and Santa Clara.
• Portland's roster features a heralded sophomore class that was ranked fifth in the nation entering UP as freshmen last fall; midfielder Allison Wetherington was named the 2013 WCC Freshman of the Year, while Ellie Boon (All-WCC Honorable Mention), Danica Evans (All-WCC Honorable Mention) and Ariel Viera (WCC All-Freshman Team) also garnered all-league recognition.
• The Pilots have led the nation in attendance for nine straight years; UP set a then-NCAA record for attendance in a season when 47,082 fans attended Portland women's soccer games in 2008.
• The Pilots have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA playoffs for 14 straight seasons and have reached the playoffs during 21 of the last 22 years.
• Portland won the NCAA National Championship in 2002 and in 2005.
• Garrett Smith has been named the league's top coach six times.
