Box Score (pdf)PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland seniors Cassandra Brown and Kari Luttinen each scored 15 points and fellow senior Cassandra Thompson added 13 points and nine rebounds as the Pilots defeated the Western Oregon Wolves 70-60 in an exhibition women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. Portland freshmen Ashley Gray and Sara Zaragoza nabbed eight and seven rebounds, respectively, as the Pilots out-rebounded the Wolves 47-25.
Portland jumped out to an early double-digit lead, with the help of a corner three-pointer by sophomore Hannah Mattson, and never looked back en route to the win. Every available player saw action for the Pilots, and sophomore Kaylie Van Loo just missed scoring in double figures with nine points in her first action as a Pilot.
The Portland lead would stretch to 17 before the Pilots entered the locker room with a cozy 39-25 lead. Luttinen had a team-best 11 points at the break.
The Pilots would maintain their comfortable lead in the second half and 13 of Brown's 15 points came during the game's second stanza. Portland would empty the bench after a pull-up jumper by Luttinen made it a 17-point game with just under five minutes left to play.
Brown was six of eight from the field in the second half, while Luttinen was 7-for-12 overall. Thompson was also accurate from the floor, shooting six of nine, helping the Pilots claim a 30-18 edge in points in the point.
Portland shot 46.7 percent on the night, while holding the Wolves to just 31.4 percent shooting. Western Oregon's Dana Goularte, who shot 11-for-12 from the free throw line, was the game's high scorer with 25 points.
The game marked the debut for new Portland head coach Cheryl Sorenson, who replaced long-time head coach Jim Sollars. Sollars retired at the end of last season after 28 years at the helm of the Pilots.
Portland has one more exhibition game scheduled for next Tuesday, Nov. 11, against the Concordia Cavaliers at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Pilots then open the regular season at Oregon State on Friday Nov. 14.
