Video Highlights (Courtesy of Gonzaga Athletics)SPOKANE, Wash. --- Portland sophomores Parkes Kendrick and Ariel Viera both scored in the first half and senior Rebekah Kurle added a goal after the break as the Pilots shutout the Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-0 in the West Coast Conference season finale at Luger Field on Saturday afternoon. Portland (7-9-3, 4-4-1 WCC) sophomore goalkeeper Hanna de Haan was stellar in goal, earning her second shutout of the year.
Sophomore Devlyn Jeter helped set-up Portland's first goal in the first half when she dummied a ball, letting it roll into space before spinning away from the defender to create a 1-v-1 with the Gonzaga (9-9-1, 4-4-1 WCC) goalkeeper Christie Tombari. Jeter then cracked a shot that was saved by Tombari, but Kendrick was there to easily tap in the rebound to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. It's the third goal of the season for Kendrick, and it's the second assist for Jeter.
The Pilots continued to create chances following the goal, and junior Noelle La Prevotte drilled a shot that was saved by Tombari in the 24th minute. Moments later sophomore Ellie Boon had a similar shot that was saved, and then senior Emily Sippel had a golden opportunity in the 30th minute. On a pass from La Prevotte near the top of the box, Sippel took a touch, turned and hit one that was knocked away by Tombari, who this time was able to pounce on the loose ball after the save.
At the other end of the field de Haan helped keep it a one-goal lead when she made a diving, one-handed save on a header by Tori Lee in the 40th minute that seemed destined for the left corner of the net.
And then with just 30 seconds remaining in the half, Portland went short on a corner before sophomore Allison Wetherington sent a pass to an un-marked Viera outside the top of the 18-yard box. Viera didn't hesitate and hammered a perfectly placed shot inside the right post to give the Pilots the 2-0 lead at the half. It's the first career goal for Viera, Portland's right back.
After the break, the Pilots took control of possession mid-way through the second half and rarely relinquished it. Great build up in the 74th minute led to a pair of shots for Hannah Griffiths Boston, which were both saved. And then in the 79th minute, Kendrick sent a nice pass to the center of the box, where Griffiths Boston was tripped to earn the Pilots a PK.
Kurle, in her final game, then stepped up to take it, and she buried it into the back of the net for her first goal of the year, giving the Pilots a cozy 3-0 lead.
De Haan continued her solid play in goal after the half, coming through with a couple of clutch saves. In the 51st minute, she denied a shot off the foot of Heather Johnson. And then in the 69th minute, she denied a hard-hit shot by Katey Pennington from point blank range.
She would finish with eight saves total, while Tombari countered with nine. Portland claimed a 19-13 edge in shots and finished with a decisive 12-8 advantage in shots on goal.
The game marked the final appearance for Portland's three seniors, Kurle, Sippel and Lorielle McCluskie. This group made it to the Second Round of the NCAA Playoffs three times and they helped the Pilots claim the program's 13th WCC Title as juniors last season.
