THIS WEEK • The Portland Pilots continue their four-game homestand by hosting the Portland State Vikings and Montana Lady Griz at the Chiles Center this weekend.
• The Vikings first visit on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game.
• Montana then follows on Sunday, with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m.
LAST WEEK • The Pilots dropped a pair of games to Oregon and Washington at the Chiles Center.
• Against the Ducks on Friday night, the Pilots were within five points early in the second half, but Oregon pulled away for a 72-49 win; Cassandra Brown led the way for the Pilots with 24 points.
• The Huskies, who are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches' polls, used a late run in the second half to claim an 80-45 victory; Brown was 3-for-3 from three-point range en route to 17 points, and Cassandra Thompson matched a career high with 14 boards.
ABOUT THE PILOTS • Senior Kari Luttinen surpassed the 1,000 career points plateau against Utah on Nov. 29 and the guard now has 1,029 career points, which ranks 20th all-time at UP; the Seattle native is averaging an impressive 10.7 points per game for her career.
• Senior Cassandra Brown (981 points) is on the verge of cracking the 1,000 career point milestone, while senior Jasmine Wooton (852 points) should also become a 1,000-point scorer this season.
• Brown was named to the Nugget Classic All-Tournament Team (Nov. 28-29) after averaging 14.0 points per game to help the Pilots claim the consolation trophy; during Portland's win over Utah (Nov. 29) she had 20 points and nine boards.
• Head coach Cheryl Sorenson is in her first year at the helm of the UP women's basketball program; Sorenson spent three years as an assistant coach with the Pilots before replacing long-time head coach Jim Sollars, who retired after 28 years on The Bluff.
• Jasmine Wooton was named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Team and the Pilots were tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll.
• Wooton landed All-WCC Honorable Mention as a junior, averaging 13.1 points and 4.3 assists; last season Wooton exploded for a career-high 36 points during a 73-65 win at Pacific on Dec. 28; it's the most points scored by a Pilot since Martha Sheldon also scored 36 in 1991.
• Brown also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention last year and is Portland's top returning scorer (14.1 ppg).
• Last season's 72-51 win over No. 24 San Diego on Jan. 8 was Portland's first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 6, 2003, when the Pilots topped No. 20 Oregon 76-58 at the Chiles Center.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS • Portland State enters the weekend with a 1-6 record and is coming off a 73-41 loss at Gonzaga last weekend; PSU's lone win was a 56-50 victory at home over Navy.
• Junior guard Emily Easom leads in the team in scoring with a 12.7 points per game average and she's one of three Vikings scoring in double figures.
• Head coach Sherri Murrell is in her eighth year at Portland State and former UP sharp-shooter Jennifer Wassom is in her fourth year as an assistant coach with the Vikings.
• Montana comes to The Bluff with a 3-4 record after defeating Carroll College 64-34 last weekend.
• Senior guard Kellie Rubel (10.7 ppg) and senior forward Maggie Rickman (10.0 ppg) lead the team in scoring.
