PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Cassandra Brown scored a game-high 24 points, but the Oregon Ducks pulled away from the Pilots to win 72-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game played on Friday night at the Chiles Center. Kari Luttinen added 10 points for Portland.
Â
The Ducks (3-3) jumped out to an early lead in the first half, but the Pilots (1-5) remained within reach. Trailing by seven points seven minutes into the game, Cassandra Thompson hit a lay-up on a nice feed from Jazmyn Johnson to cut the deficit to five.
Â
But Oregon responded and would soon push the lead to 18 points, with the help of back-to-back three-pointers by Lexi Brando and Katelyn Loper. Brown and the Pilots didn't falter, and the senior scored the final four points of the half to help pull Portland within 35-23 at the break.
Â
The Pilots continued their momentum after the half as Brown and Luttinen opened the second stanza with consecutive buckets. Portland's run would stretch to 16-5 and soon the Pilots were down only five after a lay-up from Hannah Mattson made it a 42-37 game with 15:29 remaining.
Â
Portland was still within eight a few minutes later when Ashley Gray scored on a solid move down low, but the Ducks would then heat up from outside and connect on multiple three-pointers to once again climb ahead by double digits.
Â
The lead was soon 21 points and Oregon cruised to the win from there.
Â
Brown made all six of her of her free throws and made four from behind the three-point arc en route to her game-high in points. Luttinen added four assists for the Pilots, who were without the services of usual starting point guard Jasmine Wooton because of an injury. Jazmyn Johnson led Portland in rebounds with a career-best seven boards.
Â
11 three-pointers helped the Ducks claim the win and Oregon shot 28-for-60 (46.7 percent) overall. Lexi Peterson scored a team-high 16 points and Jillian Alleyne registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Pilots shot 34.6 percent (18-for-52) and Oregon held a 41-31 edge in rebounds.
Â
The Pilots will next face their third straight opponent from the Pac-12 as the Washington Huskies visit the Chiles Center on Sunday. Tip-off between the two northwest rivals is set for 2 p.m.
