Time LapsePORTLAND, Ore. --- Stanford's Chioma Ubogagu scored the game's only goal in the 30th minute as the fifth ranked Cardinal overcame the No. 14 Portland Pilots 1-0 in front of 4,847 fans at Merlo Field on Saturday night. The near sellout crowd included a record 2,503 students. It's the second time in a week that Portland has set a new student attendance record.
Stanford (3-0-0) remains perfect on the season and has yet to concede a goal, despite playing three ranked opponents on the road.
The Pilots (1-2-0) though gave the Cardinal all they could handle as the two teams took turns controlling possession throughout the night.
"With a young team you don't judge them after 12 days of preseason and after playing two top-10 teams, which included a long road trip," head coach Garrett Smith said. "This team is continuing to grow and establish who they are. We're not going to get there overnight, but I think you should really start looking at us a month from now when we get some more games and practices under our belt. The rate that we've improved from the level where we were for the Kentucky game is remarkable.
"We're definitely not comfortable losing, but we played the No. 5 team in the country tonight, made one mistake and they capitalized."
UP sophomore Danica Evans nearly took advantage of a Stanford error in the first half when she intercepted a pass intended for Cardinal goalkeeper Jane Campbell in the 13th minute. Evans tried to go between the legs of Campbell with a shot, but the ball took a slight deflection off of Campbell before a defender knocked it away.
Ubogagu then gave Stanford a lead that would stand when she won possession near the center circle, dribbled up field and slotted one past UP sophomore goalkeeper Hanna de Haan in a 1-v-1 opportunity. It's the second goal this year for the senior forward.
Portland's defense and goalkeepers were otherwise solid, despite de Haan leaving the match with an injury early in the second half. True freshman Taylor Luty played the final 43 minutes in goal and finished with one save.
UP defender Alyssa Edenstrom denied a potential Stanford goal in the 53rd minute after Ubogagu had taken a touch to avoid Luty inside the 18-yard box. She then fed a pass to Ryan Walker-Hartshorn, who had a clear look at an open net, but Edenstrom was there to sweep the shot away.
Meanwhile at the other end of the field, Evans forced Campbell into a pair of saves during the game's final 45 minutes, while senior Emily Sippel also cracked a shot.
Next up for the Pilots is a trip north for the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash., next weekend. Portland is slated to face Dartmouth on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Wisconsin on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
