Box Score I
Box Score (pdf) CORVALLIS, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw with the Oregon State Beavers on a warm Friday night at Lorenz Field. Portland freshman goalkeeper Taylor Luty made four saves to preserve the shutout for the Pilots (3-4-1).
The Pilots controlled possession and created multiple chances throughout the game, but were ultimately unable to put the ball into the back of the OSU (0-6-3) net.
The best chance for Portland in the first half came in the 23rd minute when Rebekah Kurle sent a cross into the box that found the foot of teammate Parkes Kendrick near the penalty spot. Kendrick redirected the ball on frame, but OSU goalkeeper Bella Geist made a nice save to keep the game level at 0-0.
To deal with Portland's non-stop possession in the OSU half, the Beavers packed in making it difficult for the Pilots to maneuver towards the goal.
In the 42nd minute the Pilots were awarded a free kick 25 yards away from the Beaver goal and Allison Whetherington stepped up to take the kick. Whetherington hit a well- struck shot on frame, but a diving Geist held onto the ball and recorded her second save of the game.
After the break, Portland came out in the second half with continued pressure.
Danica Evans freed herself up in the 50th minute and had a shot from 20 yards out, but once again Geist was there to make the save.
The Pilots continued to bombard the OSU box with cross after cross, and in the 53rd minute Evans played a promising ball toward a streaking Jess Kennedy. But the pass was just in front of Kennedy.
Emily Sippel had a go when she dribbled through OSU defenders and took a shot from 20 yards out that went just wide of the goal in the 75th minute.
Another chance came in the 82nd minute when a bouncing ball in the box landed at Madeline Dieker's foot. Her shot went just wide of the right post.
The final chance to win the game in regulation came in the 85th minute when Evans dribbled into the box and sent a shot wide left of the goal.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the Pilots and Beavers headed into the first of possibly two 10 minute sudden victory overtime periods.
The overtime periods were no different than regulation with Portland never relinquishing pressure.
Ellie Boon sent a shot towards the OSU goal from about six yards out, but didn't get a clean hit and Geist made her fourth save of the game.
In the 95th minute Kaycie Young sent a corner into the box that found the head of Dieker, who redirected the cross towards the far post, but sailed just wide.
Kennedy and Noelle La Prevotte had shots from distance in the 106th and 107th minutes, respectively, but both were saved by Geist, bringing her total saves on the night to six.
Portland outshot OSU 18-12 for the game with six of those 18 shots on-goal. It's the second career shutout for Luty.
The Pilots next head up to Seattle on Thursday, Sept. 25 to take on Seattle U at 7:00 p.m.
