Box Score (pdf)OREM, Utah --- Portland senior Emily Liger registered a match-high 13 kills and sophomore Makayla Lindburg notched her second straight double-double, but the Pilots fell to Idaho State 3-0 in the second match of the La Quinta Inn and Suits Invitational at Utah Valley University on Saturday morning. Idaho State (5-7) held off Portland (5-5) with set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20.
ISU came out strong to start the match and overcame a late Portland run to claim set number one 25-22. Freshman Ali Koumelis had a service ace that began a run to bring the Pilots within two points of the Bengals at 18-16. Portland continued to fight back and a kill by Lindburg tied the match at 22-22. ISU quickly called a timeout to stifle Portland's momentum, and the Bengals came out of the break and scored three straight points to win the set. Lindburg led the way for the Pilots with five kills on the set.
The Pilots took control early in the second set, but the Bengals came back to win it 25-21. Portland started strong by scoring the first five points and continued to hold onto a lead, until ISU was able to tie it at 18-18. The teams went point-for-point on the next few rallies, but the Bengals edged out the Pilots late to take the set. Portland was led by Liger who had seven kills.
The Bengals continued their momentum to take the third set 25-20. Idaho State scored the first six points of the set, but despite going down early the Pilots drew within one point at 11-10. From there, ISU pulled away and went on to claim the set and match point. Liger, Lindburg, and sophomore Katie Sullivan each contributed three kills during the set.
Lindburg recorded 10 kills and 10 digs against the Bengals, while senior Katie Mardesich had 16 of Portland's 54 digs.
The Pilots will next face Utah Valley tonight at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific) in the final match of the La Quinta Inn and Suites Invitational.
