Box Score I
Box Score (pdf)SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland sophomore Danica Evans scored her fourth goal of the season and senior Rebekah Kurle nearly connected on the game-winner late in the second overtime, but the Pilots and Seattle Redhawks would finish in a 1-1 tie on Thursday night at Championship Field. It's the second straight tie for the Pilots (3-4-2).
Kurle's near winner came in the 110th minute after Evans had cracked a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Seattle keeper Brianna Smallidge had difficulty with Evans' shot, and Kurle was there to try to put away the rebound. But under heavy pressure, Kurle pushed the shot wide of the left post and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.
The first goal of the game came in the 56th minute courtesy Seattle's Natasha Howe, who had gained possession inside the left edge of the box. Howe took a couple of touches and placed a shot perfectly inside the right corner of the net from 12 yards out. Her first goal of the year gave Settle the 1-0 lead.
Now down a goal, the Pilots remained composed and Kurle nearly equalized twice. First in the 61st minute the senior forward put a header on-target, but Smallidge had it covered. Moments later on a thru ball from Evans, Kurle drove one towards the right post, but this time Smallidge made a diving save to keep the score 1-0 in Seattle's favor.
Portland continued to attack the final third, and it was Evans who leveled the score in the 69th minute. Evans, who had received a pass inside the 18-yard box from Emily Sippel, had her initial shot blocked, but she was there to finish on the rebound to make it a 1-1 game.
Both teams then searched for the game-winner, and Portland sophomore Allison Wetherington nearly ended it in regulation. But she blasted a shot wide of the left post from a tough angle with less than two minutes remaining.
After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, Evans had the first shot of the overtime, but the low bouncer from 18 yards out was saved by Smallidge. Howe then rattled the crossbar with a shot from distance in the 97th minute, and the two sides would head to another extra period.
The Pilots finished with 12 shots on the night, six on-goal, and goalkeepers Taylor Luty and Hanna de Haan combined to make four saves. De Haan had perhaps the save of the night in the 47th minute when she came out to challenge Julia Moravec in a 1-v-1. The sophomore keeper did well to deny the shot and keep the game scoreless.
The Pilots controlled possession early and created some chances during the game's first 20 minutes. In the seventh minute, Ariel Viera had possession deep in the final third before sending a ball in the direction of Jess Kennedy near the penalty spot. But with a defender on her back, Kennedy couldn't quite get a clean hit and the shot was wide of the right post.
Then in the 14th minute, Kaycie Young took a touch on a clearance that fell to her feet before sending a volley towards the left post. Smallidge made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
The Redhawks also had a handful of opportunities during the first half, including in the 38th minute when the ball somehow stayed out of the net after a scramble in the box. Moments later Stephanie Verdoia sent a dangerous ball across the frame that SU couldn't quite get a finishing touch on.
Smallidge finished with five saves for Seattle (4-3-1).
The Pilots next return home to host the Washington Huskies on Sunday in Portland's final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff between the northwest rivals is set for 1 p.m. at Merlo Field.
