SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The San Francisco Dons claimed an 85-68 win over the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym. Cassandra Brown led the Pilots (2-14, 0-5 WCC) with 20 points.
Â
The Dons (10-7, 1-5 WCC) shot 56 percent and led from start to finish en route to the win. The Pilots did remain within reach for much of the first half after the Dons knocked down the opening bucket. Portland's Jasmine Wooton had four early points and Brown and Kari Luttinen both drained a three-pointer to make it a 12-10 game in San Francisco's favor with 13:47 left in the first half.
Â
From there the Dons would stretch the lead to double digits before Luttinen connected on another three, this time briefly pulling the Pilots within nine. But the Dons responded and would take a 43-30 lead into the locker room at the half.
Â
Following a San Francisco lay-up to begin the second half, Portland's Cassandra Thompson hit a jumper and Hannah Mattson drilled a three to cut the deficit to 10 points. But that's as close as the Pilots would get as the Dons cruised to the win.
Â
Brown has scored 20 or more points in four of Portland's five WCC games. She hit four three's against the Dons and she was the team's top rebounder with eight boards.
Â
Luttinen finished 3-for-4 from deep and scored 15 points, while Wooton added 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
Â
Taylor Proctor scored a game-high 23 points and was one of four Dons to score in double figures. USF shot 33-for-59 from the floor, connected on nine three-pointers out of 15 tries and went 10-for-14 on free throws.
Â
The Pilots finished with nine three's, shot 38.8 percent (26-for-67) overall and were seven of eight from the foul line.
Â
Portland turned the ball over just seven times, which is a season-low, and the Dons held a 40-29 edge on the glass.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the Loyola Marymount Lions in a WCC contest on Thursday night. Tip-off at the Chiles Center is set for 7 p.m.
