Hannah Griffiths Boston, the usual women's soccer blogger, is taking this week off. No worries though, because freshmen Rachel Lusby and Cecilia Pedersen have provided us with a guest blog!Entry #6 - The Guest Bloggers
Oct. 16, 2015Hej med jer,
Rachel Lusby and Cecilia Pedersen here. For those of you who don't speak Danish that means "hello all of you". This week we will be your guest bloggers. The topic: us. More specifically our Dane-meets-American-for-the-first-time relationship with each other. We will apologize for not being as funny on paper as we are in person, but we didn't have time to make a vlog, because it's midterms week here at UP.
Halfway through the summer we both found out that we were going to be roommates. Keep in mind that we had never met each other, never skyped, never talked on the phone, and knew nothing about each other. I (Rachel) remember trying to figure out what size clothes she wears so that Whitney, our Director of Operations could get her gear. Eventually we got her right sizes but not before hearing that she was 5'2", 5'6", and 5'8" (she is actually 5'9"). I (Cecilia) knew her name, and nothing else, so I stalked her hard on (excuse my English, I'm still working on it), but without any luck because Rhonda (editor's note: Rhonda is Rachel's nickname) doesn't do social media very well. So I had no other options but to wait and find out. Actually, when I finally met her I was kind of intimidated because look at those arms. Rachel was buff, that was all I could think of.
When I first met Cecilia, I was walking down the hallway, and I saw this tall blonde girl walking around looking very confused. The first thing I noticed was her fanny pack. Don't get me wrong I'm all for fanny packs, but the only time I've seen someone in America use one is at Disneyland. Her black leather one was a little different looking than multi-colored 1980's ones that I'm used to.
So those are our one minute conversation impressions of each other.
A few days after our first meeting, we learned something about our new friendship: that we are actually soulmates and perfect for each other, as we share humor, mindset and occasionally a bed (thanks to Whitney, we spent our first night on the road at Marquette in the same bed, so we just had to become close). Now we don't actually share bed, it was a one-time experience, but it wasn't really a big deal.
Since then, we have without doubt become the roommates everyone else wants to be. Again, ask Whitney, she thinks we're the perfect match.
The best part about rooming together is all of the things we teach each other. I (Rachel) try to teach her English. For example, C has a hard time with the phrase "I'm going to do homework". What she says is, "I'm going to make homework". Also, sometimes C has a hard time even understanding English, especially when G is talking to her, so it's a good thing she has me.
But it's not only me who need Rachel, she benefits from rooming with me too. For example, Rachel's new favourite artist is Danish Lukas Graham (seriously, youtube him, he's amazing). Also, for her birthday I suggested the freshmen go to this Danish concert, and we had so much fun. They probably didn't like Mew as much as I did, but it was a good experience. However, it is not pure good experiences with the Danish culture. For example I had some good Danish salty licorice sent to me from back home, and I think Rachel thought I was torturing her when I insisted that she should eat it. But I guess that's how it is, there are pros and cons when living with a non-native (sometimes Rachel doesn't bother to explain to me what's up with this country, because as she says: "You have to be native to understand.") But I guess, I can live with that.
Enough about us, the highlight of this week is the 2005 team, who is coming back to UP this Saturday to celebrate their 10
th year anniversary of winning the National Championship. We are super excited to meet and mingle with all of the talented players, whose success is part of the reason that we are so proud of being Pilots today.
That's all you get from your favourite guest bloggers! Next week, Hannah will be back!
De kærligste hilsner,
fra Rachel og Cecilia
