Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Loyola Marymount Lions scored twice in the first half and added an insurance goal late to claim a 3-0 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. Cole Souza, who scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute, gets credit for the game-winner.
Â
It came on a corner kick sent in by Alvaro Madrigal, who dove a ball towards the far post. That's where Souza elevated and finished in the back of the net with a powerful header. 12 minutes later, the Lions (7-6-0, 2-1-0 WCC) stretched the lead to two-goals when Madrigal buried a shot through traffic from the top of the 18.
Â
The scored would remain 2-0 until the 83rd minute when Cruz Corral provide a little breathing room for LMU. On a pass from John Bovill, Corral hit one just inside the right post from the left side of the 18-yard box.
Â
Brandon Zambrano led the Pilots (2-9-2, 0-3-0 WCC) with four shots on the day as Portland combined for 10 shots total, five on-goal. In the 38th minute, Zambrano dragged a shot wide, which was followed by another shot wide off the foot of Hugo Rhoads moments later. Rhoads then struck one towards the frame in the 43rd minute, but LMU goalkeeper Paul Blanchette was there for the save.
Â
The Pilots continued to look to pull one back in the second half, and in the 59th minute Blanchette denied a header from Thomas Peterson. Blanchette finished the day with five saves, while Portland keeper Paul Christensen also had five stops.
Â
Portland next returns to The Bluff to host the Denver Pioneers in a non-conference game on Saturday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff between the Pilots and No. 8 Pioneers is set for 7 p.m.
