SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland sophomore Michail Pervolarakis defeated Washington's Piers Foley on Friday to advance to the Round of 32 at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Washington.
Pervolarakis won with scores of 7-5, 6-3 and will now face ninth-seeded Billy Griffin of California on Saturday at noon. The match will be streamed live on

Portland had
six players advance past the first round of singles play with a quality opening round on Thursday and battled hard against elite competition on Friday. Freshman Felix Fan pushed UC Davis senior Brett Bacharach to three sets before falling by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 margin. Sophomore Pierre Garcia forced a third set tiebreaker against Fresno State's Euan McIntosh before falling 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4).
"We had a tough, sobering day today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Mike Pervolarakis got through his second round match, but the rest of our guys ran into some tough opponents and didn't make it. Pierre Garcia continues to show great improvement in his game and mental toughness. He actually served for the match in the second set against a very good Fresno State opponent and fought tooth and nail in losing 7-6 in the third set. His opponent came up with some huge shots under pressure in the tiebreaker and that proved to be the difference.
"Freshman Felix Fan battled back after losing the first set against a UC Davis senior, but lost his serve once in the third set and that was the difference. Jared Madison and Carlos Donat lost to top of the line-up guys from Stanford and Cal, respectively."
The Pilots had two doubles teams advance on Thursday, but both were knocked out in Friday's Round of 32.
"We are still trying to find our way in doubles," Gross added. "Kent Andreasen and Jared Madison and Jamie Fisher and Goutham Sundaram are both first time partners and showed some spark this weekend. We are really trying to be versatile, unpredictable, and aggressive and those guys showed some of that. We aren't always executing, but we are seeing the right intent.
"No question we are better from these last couple of days' experiences. Mike marches on in the main draw tomorrow and rest of the guys will battle through the consolation to get some match play. My hope is that our guys play with the same sense of urgency in consolation that they will need to bring to the dual match season. I think they all know they are fighting for respect and positions, and to achieve our long term goals they know that every moment of competition is important. I look forward to seeing us bounce back tomorrow."
