PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots tied the No. 7 Denver Pioneers 0-0 in a non-conference match on Saturday night at Merlo Field. Goalkeeper Kienan Weekes recorded five saves en route to a shutout in his first career start and appearance.
Denver (11-0-3) remains undefeated on the season as Portland (2-9-3) continued their impressive home showing against top 10 teams at home.
Hugo Rhoads sent the ball towards the Denver goal in the 14
th minute that deflected to the feet of Jackson Jellah who settled the ball and sent a shot back towards the Denver goal. The ball was deflected into the air and the Pioneers escaped the Pilots first attack of the game unscathed.
Portland was awarded a free kick in the 28
th minute 30 yards out on the left side of the field. Eddie Sanchez sent a knee high ball into the box towards an unmarked Erik Edwardson who redirected the kick just high of the Pioneer goal for the Pilots second shot of the half.
In the 32
nd minute Denver earned a corner kick that Jordan Schweitzer got a foot on sending the ball toward the Pilot net. Portland goalkeeper Weekes held his ground and collected the ball cleanly keeping the score level at zero and earning his first career save.
The Pilots came right out in the second half with a quality opportunity in the 45
th minute. Edwardson found himself open on the right side of the Pioneer goal six yards out with the ball at his foot. He sent a shot towards the near post that Denver goalkeeper Dan Jackson deflected back towards the Portland forward who then sent a ball across the face of the goal that the Pioneers were able to clear.
In the 72
nd minute Sanchez found himself open at the top of the box with the ball at his feet. He took a touch to his left with the outside of his left foot and let it rip. The bending ball went high of the upper 90 as the score remained 0-0.
Another save by Weekes with thirty seconds left in regulation kept Denver out of the back of the net. The time would tick off of the clock and send the game into overtime.
The Pilots were the better team in overtime controlling the ball in the Denver half for the majority of the 20 minutes. The Pioneers backline held strong limiting the Pilot opportunities and preserving the scoreless game.
Portland's best opportunity of overtime came in the 106
th minute when Rhoads took a free kick from 25 yards out that caught the Pioneer goalkeeper by surprise. Jackson was able to make a late diving reaction save to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
The Pilots will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 30 when they host the Santa Clara Broncos at 7:00 p.m.
