PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior guard Bryce Pressley scored a career-best 30 points, including 8-of-11 shooting from three-point range, as the Portland Pilots opened the 2015-16 season with a 98-81 win over the Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls Friday night before a crowd of 1,858 at the Chiles Center.
The new-look Pilots played fast and connected on 14-of-30 three-pointers, the most attempts by a Portland team since Feb. 28, 2004 versus San Diego (33).
Freshman point guard Jazz Johnson (Lake Oswego, Ore.) came off the bench to add 14 points and sophomore forward Gabe Taylor chipped in 11.
Junior point guard Alec Wintering, a Preseason All-West Coast Conference pick, had a solid all-around game with five points, seven rebounds and 11 assists.
Pressley was an efficient 11-for-16 from the field overall and added eight rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes of action.
Five players made their official collegiate debut for Portland on Friday night. In addition to Johnson, junior center Ray Barreno (New Mexico State JC) got the start and finished with eight points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 16 minutes. Freshman guard Rashad Jackson (Bakersfield, Calif.) scored four points, while freshman center Colin Russell (Folsom, Calif.) had two points and three rebounds. Junior forward Jarrel Marshall, a transfer from Palm Beach State Junior College, missed the game with an ankle injury. Marshall is expected to start for the Pilots when healthy.
Pressley got going early by drilling a triple on Portland's first possession of the game. He would hit three more in the first half as the Pilots created separation and carried a 48-33 lead into the break.
Oregon Tech would close the margin to 73-61 on a three-point play by Joel Yellow Owl with 8:22 remaining, but Portland would push the margin back to 89-69 on Pressley's eighth three of the night with 4:42 remaining.
Yellow Owl led Oregon Tech with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Lavar Moore added 15 points.
Portland shot 52 percent from the field and held the Hustlin' Owls to 39 percent overall. The teams were even in rebounds at 43 apiece. The Pilots racked up 24 assists against just 11 turnovers, while Oregon Tech had 14 assists and 15 turnovers.
Prior to tip-off, Oregon Tech head coach Danny Miles was recognized and honored by the Pilots. Miles, who has won three NAIA II National Championships with the Hustlin' Owls, has announced that he will retire at the end of this season – his 45th with Oregon Tech. Miles is one of only two college coaches to eclipse 1,000 career wins.
Portland will have a quick turnaround and travel to UC Davis for a 4 p.m. tip-off on Sunday. The Aggies lost in overtime Friday night to North Dakota State, 79-71. All Pilot games will be aired on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT) with a 30-minute pregame show. Live video will be available courtesy of
