DAVIS, Calif. – Portland fell behind by 19 points early after a slow start and couldn't recover in a 79-66 loss to UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion. Junior point guard Alec Wintering led the Pilots with 17 points and six assists, while sophomore guard D'Marques Tyson scored 15 off the bench.
The Pilots (1-1) shot just 32 percent from the field overall and connected on 11-of-31 three-pointers, while the Aggies (1-1) shot 52 percent overall and 7-of-14 from beyond the arch. Portland also made just 1-of-6 free throws compared to UC Davis going 14-of-18 overall.
UC Davis also controlled the interior with a 53-33 rebounding margin and 44-22 edge in points in the paint.
The Pilots got off to a difficult start and trailed 32-13 early in the first half. Tyson ignited an 18-9 rally with 12 first half points to cut the margin to 41-31 at the break.
The Aggies (1-1) responded by scoring the first five points of the second half and would push the margin to as much as 20 points late in regulation.
Portland forced 20 turnovers in the game and was able to gain a 28-12 in points off of turnovers.
Senior guard Bryce Pressley added 10 points and six rebounds for the Pilots.
Brynton Lemar scored a game-high 18 points, while Josh Fox had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Aggies. Neal Monson, the older brother of future Pilot Alec Monson, grabbed 15 rebounds.
Portland will return to The Bluff briefly before heading back out on the road to face Colorado on Friday at 6 p.m. (PT).
