PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots beat the #23 San Diego Toreros 3-0 in the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon. This win marked the first time the Pilots have beaten the Toreros since 1991 and the first time in program history that Portland has beaten a ranked opponent.
Portland (15-12, 5-10 WCC) swept USD (19-8, 12-3 WCC) with set scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-22.
The Pilots opened up the match with a four point run that began on a pair of points that came off of blocks. Portland expanded their lead to five at 13-8 thanks to a kill by Brittney Markwith. USD closed the lead to two at 14-12, but the home side pulled away and Hannah Troutman found the back corner on a kill to make the score 21-17. Katie Sullivan would set Portland up for set point, and Liger earned the next point to give the first set to the Pilots. Portland out-blocked and out-hit the Toreros 5-2 and .333 to .308, respectively, during the set.
Portland earned an out of system kill by Troutman to tie the second set at three. Sullivan and Sarah Savoca then teamed up for the Pilots seventh block of the match to go up 11-9. The two sides were back-and-forth until Sullivan hit a kill that began a five point run for Portland which put them up 19-13. The Toreros held off two set points, but an ensuing error gave the Pilots the second set win. Troutman and Liger led Portland offensively during the set with five kills each.Â
Djurdjina Milovic had two service aces in a row to make the score 8-4 in favor of the home side. A long rally ended with a block by Sullivan and Troutman to put the Pilots up 11-9. USD kept with the Portland through the middle of the set and tied it at 21. The Pilots held off the Toreros to complete the sweep.
Portland was led offensively by Liger who tallied 17 kills and as a team the Pilots hit .300 on the match.
The Pilots will hit the road next weekend for their final WCC road trip of the year to face Pacific and Saint Mary's before returning home to face Northwest rival Gonzaga on Senior Night on Nov. 23.
