PORTLAND, Ore. --- The ninth-ranked and defending Pac-12 Conference Champion Oregon State Beavers pulled away from the Portland Pilots on Monday night to claim a 94-50 non-conference win at the Chiles Center. Freshman Ellie Woerner was 2-for-3 from deep to lead the Pilots in scoring once again with nine points.
Â
But the Beavers (2-0) were too tall and had too many weapons as they opened a 27-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Jamie Weisner led Oregon State with a game-high 22 points and she was one of five Beavers to score in double figures. Marie Gulich notched a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) off the bench to help the Beavers record a 46-19 edge in rebounds and register a 46-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Â
Portland's (1-1) Corissa Turley battled foul trouble to score eight points, all in the second half, which helped the Pilots hang around in the third quarter. Holly Blades and Rachelle Owens were also solid, chipping in with seven points each, and Owens added four assists.
Â
A bright spot for the Pilots was their three-point shooting as Portland connected on six three's on the night. Both Owens and Julie Spencer made their only three-point attempt, and Hannah Mattson beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter with a deep three from the top of the key.
Â
The Pilots were also active on the defensive end, forcing the Beavers into making 14 turnovers. But Oregon State overcame the miscues to shoot 50.8 percent (32-for-63) overall, while holding the Pilots to 29.8 percent shooting.
Â
Next up for the young and new-look Pilots is a road trip to the state of Montana to face the two Montana schools. First on Friday the Pilots will be in Bozeman to face the Montana State Bobcats at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). Portland will then trek to Missoula on Sunday for a 12 p.m. game with the Lady Griz.
