PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-0 in the last match of West Coast Conference play on Monday night in the Chiles Center. On her senior night, Emily Liger led the Pilots offensively with 11 kills.
Gonzaga (16-15, 7-11 WCC) won their final match of the season over Portland (16-14, 6-12 WCC) with set scores of 25-17, 25-15, and 25-18.
The Bulldogs worked to an 8-2 advantage to start the first set. Gonzaga maintained momentum through the set until Makayla Lindburg made a huge play at the net that sent the Pilots on a three point run to cut the Bulldog lead to six once again at 20-14. The visitors from Spokane held off Portland to win the first set. The Pilots were led offensively by Brittney Markwith and Sarah Savoca who had three kills each.
Gonzaga continued the strong play from the first set into the second gaining a 17-5 lead. Portland held the momentum later in the set during a 6-2 run, but the Bulldogs held off the Pilots to take the set and a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Savoca tallied another three kills during the set.
The two sides were within three of each other through the first half of the set. Gonzaga used a 5-1 run to take a five point lead at 13-8. Two Liger kills sandwiched a Morgan Robinson ace to cut the lead to two at 19-17. The Bulldogs won six of the last seven points to win the set and match. Liger recorded seven kills during the set.
The Pilots will finish out the season on the road when they head north to play Seattle University at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27.
