CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Portland Pilots struggled to 36 percent shooting from the field as Colorado State pulled away for a 90-74 victory Friday night at the Corpus Christi Coastal Challenge. The Rams (5-0) remained unbeaten by shooting a blistering 53 percent from the field and 10-of-17 from three-point range.
The Pilots (3-3), who entered the game among the national leaders in three-pointers made and three-point percentage, converted 12-of-40 from beyond the arc. The 40 attempts are a new Portland school record, but many of the makes came late with the game out of reach.
Alec Wintering and D'Marques Tyson led the Pilots with 14 points each, while Jarrel Marshall added 10 off the bench.
Gian Clavell finished with a game-high 21 points, while Antwan Scott added 17 off the bench for the Rams.
Colorado State jumped out to an early 15-5 lead, but the Pilots responded with a 10-0 run highlighted by a pair of Wintering threes and a Ray Barreno put-back to even the score. The Rams took advantage of Portland's poor shooting the rest of the way to take a 44-36 lead into the half.
It was more offensive struggles for the Pilots early in the second half as the team missed its first ten three-point attempts of the period as the Rams continued to get to the rim at will and push the margin to as much as 28 points before a late UP rally cut into the final deficit.
The Rams gained a 43-33 rebounding edge and 42-22 margin in points in the paint. Portland forced 17 turnovers and committed just nine, but the Pilots only finished with seven assists on 25 field goals made.
Portland will face Southern Illinois (5-1) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) to conclude the tournament. The game will be aired live on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT) with pregame radio coverage beginning at 4 p.m.
