PORTLAND, Ore. – Alec Wintering scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Portland Pilots to a 78-72 road victory over crosstown rival Portland State Wednesday night at the Stott Center. The game featured eight ties and 12 lead changes as it came down to the final minute to determine the outcome.
Wintering added six rebounds, six assists and three steals in 36 minutes of action, while sophomore Jason Todd chipped in 14 points. Jarrel Marshall added 12 points and sophomore center Philipp Hartwich came off the bench for five points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
Cameron Forte paced the Vikings (3-3) with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Zach Gengler finished with 17 points.
The Pilots (4-4) led a majority of the game until Armani Collins drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give PSU its first lead since early in the first half at 63-62.
After exchanging leads back-and-forth, a pair of Isaiah Pineiro free throws put the Vikings on top 68-67 with 4:16 left. Marshall answered with a jumper and then Wintering converted a layup to give the Pilots a 71-68 lead.
After a pair of missed free throws by PSU, Wintering made another layup for a five-point lead. Forte drilled two free throws and then the Vikings had a chance to tie with a three-pointer, but missed and the Pilots got a pair of clutch free throws by Bryce Pressley with 25 seconds left to make it 75-70. Folloing another defensive stop, Todd iced the game with two more at the charity stripe.
Portland shot 45 percent from the field and made 11-of-14 free throws in the game, while PSU finished at 33 percent overall and 13-for-23 at the foul line. The Pilots were outrebounded by a 47-45 margin, but outscored the Vikings in the pain 36-26.
The Pilots struggled offensively early, making just 4-of-13 three-pointers in the first half, but finished the period with an 8-0 run to take a 37-29 edge into the break. Portland held the Vikings to 26 percent shooting in the half.
Portland will host Boise State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center. The game will be broadcast live on TheW.tv and radio coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
