CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Portland had two shots for the win in the closing seconds, but neither dropped as the Pilots fell to Southern Illinois 80-79 to conclude the Corpus Christi Coastal Classic Saturday night at AmericanBank Arena.
The game was close throughout and featured 12 ties and 16 lead changes before the Salukis (6-1) benefitted from a banked in a three-pointer by Armon Fletcher with 2:04 left for an 80-77 lead. The Pilots (3-4) answered with a dunk by Gabe Taylor and got a pair of defensive stops, but were unable to convert in the final seconds.
Senior guard Bryce Pressley lofted a contested 10-footer that missed off the back rim and Jarrel Marshall grabbed the rebound, but his rushed shot at the buzzer missed as Southern Illinois escaped with the victory.
Pressley led the Pilots with 18 points and seven rebounds, while junior point guard Alec Wintering added 12 points and 10 assists.
Sophomore guard Jason Todd finished with a career-high 14 points, while Marshall added a season-high 15 points off the bench.
The Salukis got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Sean O'Brien, while Anthony Beane added 18 points.
Portland shot 52 percent overall and made 10-of-19 three-pointers, but struggled to 15-of-25 at the free throw line. The Salukis were 50 percent overall, 6-for-17 from three-point range and 16-of-22 at the foul line.
The Pilots committed 17 turnovers, but outrebounded the Salukis by a 32-28 margin.
Wintering, who averaged 12 points and seven assists in the two games at Corpus Christi, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Portland will return to the Rose City for a road meeting against crosstown rival Portland State on Wednesday at the Stott Center at 7 p.m. The Pilots then host Boise State on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.
