PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior point guard Alec Wintering led four Portland players in double figures with 20 points as the Pilots knocked off Concordia-Irvine by an 85-78 margin in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
Wintering scored 16 second half points and added five rebounds and five assists as the Pilots were able to pull away late.
Junior forward Jarrel Marshall added 15 points and five rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting in his Pilot debut. Sophomore Gabe Taylor finished with 14 points off the bench on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Senior guard Bryce Pressley filled the stat sheet with 12 points, six assists, three rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.
Portland shot 63 percent from the field and made 8-of-16 three-pointers, but struggled to a 15-for-26 effort from the free throw line.
The Pilots have hosted the Eagles in six consecutive exhibition games. Many have been close as Concordia has been an NAIA powerhouse and is now transitioning to NCAA Division II.
Portland led by as much as 19 points late in the first half and 18 early in the second half, but the pesky Eagles would use a 13-0 run to take a 65-63 lead on Stephen Grosey's dunk with 8:22 remaining. It was Concordia's only lead of the game and was short-lived as Pilot senior Max Livingston buried a corner three-pointer to give Portland the lead back.
Taylor followed with another three and then Wintering converted back-to-back layups to give the Pilots some breathing room with a 74-65 lead.
Concordia made one final run, scoring five straight points off of Pilot turnovers to cut the deficit to 78-75 with 2:14 remaining, but Wintering converted six straight free throws to seal the outcome.
It looked like a rout early as the Pilots raced to a 13-0 lead in the first four minutes capped by a Pressley steal and layup. Concordia settled down and would tie the game at 15-15, but the Pilot offense erupted to shoot 72 percent in the first half and take a 44-29 lead into the break.
JT Roach paced the Eagles with a team-high 20 points, while Case Bruton added 17. Concordia was held to 35 percent shooting from the field, but outrebounded the Pilots 43-33 and had a 22-5 edge in second chance points.
A total of 12 Pilots saw the court including five make their NCAA debuts. In addition to Marshall, New Mexico JC transfer Ray Barreno got the start at center and finished with two points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Rashad Jackson had two points and a rebound in five minutes. Jazz Johnson, a freshman point guard from Lake Oswego High School, played five minutes and freshman center Colin Russell played three minutes.
Portland will now prepare for its regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. against the Oregon Tech Owls at the Chiles Center. The Pilots will recognize legendary Oregon Tech head coach Danny Miles prior to tip-off as this will be his final season before retiring.
