SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots went scoreless in the final 3:40 of regulation as San Francisco overcame a 15-point second half deficit to pull out a 107-95 West Coast Conference win Thursday night at War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center.
Junior point guard Alec Wintering recorded his second straight 30-point game, finishing with 31 points four rebounds, four assists and zero turnovers for Portland. He went 7-for-15 from the field and a perfect 15-of-15 at the free throw line.
Freshman guard Jazz Johnson added a career-high 22 points off the bench, while Bryce Pressley and D'Marques Tyson added 12 apiece.
Senior guard Tim Derksen was the difference-maker for the Dons (8-5, 2-1) and finished with 27 points and eight rebounds, doing most of his damage during the decisive late rally. Sophomore point guard Devin Watson added 22 points and seven assists, while Dont'e Reynolds had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pilots (8-8, 2-1 WCC) erupted for a season-high 62 points in the first half and led by 11 at the break. The lead grew to 81-66 with 12:59 remaining on a Philipp Hartwich free throw, but the Pilots went cold thereafter.
Portland finished the game just 1-for-13 from the field and were outscored 29-10 in the final 9:32. The Pilots missed five open three-pointers in the last 3:32 that would have tied the game and then San Francisco was able to pull away with free throws in the final minute.
The 107 points allowed are the most since giving up 110 in a 114-110 win over BYU in triple overtime on Jan. 13, 2014. It is the first 100-point game allowed in regulation since San Francisco beat the Pilots 104-70 on Jan. 12, 2012 and the most allowed in regulation since a 109-88 defeat by Pepperdine on Jan. 19, 2002.
Portland will have a quick turnaround as the team travels to Santa Clara for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday. The Broncos (4-11, 0-3) dropped a 79-77 heartbreaker to Gonzaga earlier on Thursday.
