SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior guard Bryce Pressley scored a team-high 23 points, but the Portland Pilots dropped an 84-77 decision to the Santa Clara Broncos Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center. Portland falls to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in West Coast Conference play, while the Broncos improve to 5-11 and 1-3 in league play.
The game featured 16 ties and 17 lead changes, but the Pilots struggled late in regulation for the second straight game on the road trip after dropping a New Year's Eve matchup with San Francisco on Thursday.
Junior point guard Alec Wintering drilled a three-pointer with 8:06 remaining to give the Pilots a 61-60 lead, but Portland converted just 2-of-14 from the field to close the game as the Broncos would pull away.
Wintering, coming off of back-to-back 30-point games, finished with 16 points and six assists, but made just 3-of-17 field goal attempts. Sophomore forward Gabe Taylor added 12 points and a career-high nine rebounds and sophomore guard D'Marques Tyson added 12 points as well.
Freshman guard KJ Feagin scored 25 points to lead Santa Clara, including 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Junior guard Jared Brownridge added 23 points and made all 13 of his free throw attempts.
Santa Clara took a 41-39 lead into the half despite 15 first half points from Pressley.
Portland struggled to 33 percent shooting from the field and was 9-of-28 from beyond the arc for the game. Santa Clara finished at 45 percent and made 6-of-18 three-pointers. The Broncos were an efficient 32-of-37 from the free throw line compared to Portland's 22-of-28.
The Pilots were able to force 16 turnovers and committed just six on the day. That led to a 13-2 advantage in points off of turnovers, but the Broncos racked up a 45-34 rebounding advantage.
Portland will next take the court against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs (11-3, 3-0 WCC) play at San Francisco this evening. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports Northwest and radio coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. on the home of the Pilots, 910 ESPN-Portland.
