SPOKANE, Wash. – Portland junior point guard Alec Wintering scored a team-high 27 points, but Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis combined for 60 points to lead Gonzaga to an 85-74 West Coast Conference victory Saturday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Wintering finished 9-of-13 from the field and added six assists. He has now averaged 27.0 points per game over the last four games. Senior guard Bryce Pressley added 15 points for the Pilots (8-10, 2-3 WCC).
Wiltjer finished with 32 points, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Sabonis finished with 28 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots for the Bulldogs (13-3, 5-0).
Both teams struggled offensively early, but the Pilots were able to use an 11-3 run to take a 19-18 lead on a Pressley jumper with 5:35 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs responded with a 19-6 run behind a barrage from Wiltjer. The Portland, Ore. native scored 11 points in the final 4:35, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Gonzaga a 37-25 halftime lead. The 25 first-half points matched a season-low for Portland (vs. Idaho State).
Gonzaga pushed the margin to as much as 20 points in the second half before the Pilots made one final run. Pressley drilled a three-pointer to make it 79-69 with 1:31 left in regulation and Wintering's free throw cut it to a nine-point deficit, but Gonzaga was able to finish it off with free throws.
The Bulldogs gained a 43-31 margin in rebounds, including an 18-10 edge in offensive boards that translated to a 15-8 margin in second chance points.
The Pilots shot 56 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 44 percent overall. Gonzaga shot 42 percent from the field. Portland, which came in averaging 10 three-pointers made per game, finished just 4-of-20 from beyond the arc. Gonzaga was 7-of-19 from three-point range.
