PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Boise State Broncos opened up a big lead in the first half and would go on to claim an 89-49 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference women's basketball game played on Sunday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Portland junior Holly Blades led the Pilots with 11 points, while freshman Ellie Woerner scored in double figures for the sixth straight game.
Â
It was the Pilots (2-7) who jumped ahead early as Blades knocked down a three-pointer after Kaylie Van Loo began the game with a lay-up. The 5-2 lead was short-lived as the Broncos (4-3) responded by surging ahead by seven points.
Â
Moments later the deficit was only five after Woerner connected on a mid-range jumper, and Rachelle Owens made it a three-point game when she hit a jumper of her own. But Boise State ended the first quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 28-14 lead.
Â
The Broncos kept the momentum going in the second quarter and never looked back en route to the win. Boise State shot 50.0 percent on the day and six Broncos scored in double figures, led by Brooke Pahukoa with a game-high 19 points.
Â
Blades hit a pair of three-pointers, and Woerner's 10 points means the native of Sammamish, Wash., has reached double digits in points during seven of her nine collegiate games.
Â
Next up for the Pilots is a trip south to face the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon in Eugene. Tip-off for the Pilots and Ducks is set for 2 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena.
