SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State Hornets topped the Portland Pilots 7-2 and 12-2 to sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader played at Hornet Field on Saturday afternoon. The two teams will next play the finale of the four-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
Neither team was able to muster much offense in the early innings of game one until the Hornets broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Dane Fujinaka singled up the middle, which scored Scotty Burcham. An error by Portland's centerfielder also allowed Brandon Hunley to score, handing the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Pilots wasted little time to respond and quickly tied the score with two runs in the top of the fifth. Kevin Wade and Tuner Gill led off the inning with consecutive singles and both runners moved up a base on a fly-out by Brady Kerr. Davis Tominaga then came through with a two-run double to left-center field that evened the score 2-2.
Â
In the top of the sixth the Pilots had a golden opportunity to break the tie when they loaded the bases against Sacramento State pitcher Grant Kukuk. But the Pilots couldn't capitalize as Kukuk ended the threat when he induced an inning-ending ground-out off the bat of Tominaga.
Â
Sacramento State's Nathan Lukes then led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run to give the Hornets a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Sacramento State added an insurance run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Â
The Hornets finished with a slight 10-9 edge in hits and the Pilots left 11 runners stranded on the bases. Wade led Portland with three hits and Hunley had three hits for Sacramento State.
Â
Portland starting pitcher Kurt Yinger drops to 0-2 on the year after working 6.2 innings. He allowed just three runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out five and walking only one. Reliever Jordan Horak surrendered a run and Ryan Barr was charged with all three runs in the eighth.
Â
Kukuk (1-1) takes the win after taking over for starter Ty Nichols to begin the sixth inning. Ryan Smith tossed the final 2.0 innings to earn his first save of the year.
Â
In the second game, the Hornets jumped out to an early lead after plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Pilots briefly tied the score with two runs in the top of the third inning before Sacramento State scored 10 unanswered runs, which was fueled by a four-run third and a five-run fourth.
Â
In that third inning, Michael Lucarelli provided all the offense for the Pilots with a two-run home run. It's the first career home run for the senior shortstop.
Â
Portland starter Cole Doherty (0-1) lasted just 3.1 innings before giving way to three relievers. Sacramento State starter Sam Long (2-0) picks up the win.
