SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- Portland sophomore right-hander Davis Tominaga went the distance on the mound and Kevin Farley drove in the game-winning RBI's in the top of the ninth inning as the Pilots shutout the Sacramento State Hornets 2-0 in the non-conference series finale at Hornet Field on Sunday. It's the second career compete game win for Tominaga and it's his first shutout.
Â
After eight innings of scoreless baseball, Portland's (2-7) Dan Whittaker reached base with a one-out single up the middle in the top of the ninth. Michael Lucarelli then reached when he drilled a ball towards second base, which was ruled an error, and Whittaker moved up 90 feet.
Â
A ground out by Tominaga advanced both runners, bringing Farley to the plate with two outs. And the junior came through with a two-run single to right field, handing the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
Â
And that's all the support Tominaga (1-1) would need as he retired the Hornets in order in the bottom of the ninth. Tominaga scattered seven hits in 9.0 innings, while striking out five and walking two.
Â
Sacramento State (6-2) used five pitchers on the day and Justin Dillon (2-1) was saddled with the loss. The reliever struck out two in 2.0 innings, while yielding two hits and the two runs.
Â
Hits were hard to come by all day long, but both teams had their chances. The Hornets left two stranded on base in both the fifth and eighth innings, and the Pilots left Lucarelli on second after the senior shortstop had reached with a one-out double in the seventh.
Â
The Pilots next head to Eugene to face in-state rival Oregon on Tuesday. First pitch at PK Park for the Pilots and 20th-ranked Ducks is set for 6 p.m.
