EUGENE, Ore. --- After Portland's Eric Sapp tied the score with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning, the No. 20 Oregon Ducks scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame before claiming an 8-2 win over the Pilots at PK Park on Tuesday night. The Pilots return to the field tomorrow night when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for a game against the Washington Huskies.
Â
Trailing the Ducks (8-1) 1-0 with two outs in the seventh, Portland's (2-8) Turner Gill drove a line-drive single to center field to keep the inning alive. Sapp then fell behind in the count before drilling a deep fly ball that fell just short of the warning track in left field. Gill raced to around to score from first and Sapp ended up at third base after Oregon center fielder Nick Catalano had trouble fielding the ball.
Â
Davis Tominaga then came to the plate with the potential go-ahead run 90 feet away, and he roped the first pitch he saw towards second base. But Duck second baseman Mitchell Tolman made a nice grab on the line drive to keep the game tied 1-1.
Â
Oregon went to work in the bottom of the seventh against Portland reliever Brandon Snyder and eventually had runners on second and third with only one out, prompting the Portland infield to play in. The Pilots then appeared to make a clutch defensive play when second baseman Kevin Farley fielded a grounder before throwing home to try to cut off the runner.
Â
But the home plate umpire ruled Tim Susnara had just beaten the throw, giving the lead back to the Ducks. A few batters later Tolman drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle, and the Ducks would add one more run courtesy a Portland error.
Â
The loss overshadows a solid performance on the mound for Portland starter Bill Sahlinger, who held the Ducks to just one run on four hits in 5.0 innings. The junior right-hander struck out three.
Â
Oregon's lone run off of Sahlinger came in the bottom of the first inning when Tolman hit a double to right-center field with one out, which scored Matt Eureste.
Â
Oregon starting pitcher Jacob Corn (1-0) worked an effective 7.0 innings to earn his first collegiate win. He scattered seven hits and the Pilots left a runner stranded on second base in the first, second, third and sixth innings.
Â
Snyder (0-2) tossed a scoreless sixth inning before surrendering the four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
The Pilots did get a run back in the top of the eighth inning with the help of two Oregon errors. Tolman then knocked in three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish 3-for-5 with six RBI's.
Â
The Ducks claimed a slight 9-8 edge in hits and Gill and Geoffrey Lee both a two hits for the Pilots.
Â
The Pilots now face their second Pac-12 opponent in two days with first pitch set for 5 p.m. at Husky Ballpark.
