SEATTLE, Wash. --- Four Washington pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over the Portland Pilots in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark. Portland dropped its second straight road game against a Pac-12 opponent after Tuesday night's loss at No. 20 Oregon and is now 2-9 on the season. The Huskies improve to 6-3 overall.
Washington struck early with four runs in the first two innings and then held on behind the strength on a strong pitching performance by starter Noah Bremer as well as Brandon Choate and Spencer Jones out of the bullpen. The Husky pitchers combined to allow only seven baserunners with 10 combined strikeouts.
The Huskies scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a pair of throwing errors. They added three more runs in the second after Portland freshman starter Jordan Horak loaded the bases with a pair of walks and hit batter. Jack Meggs singled home the first run and the Pilots brought in Jordan Wilcox in relief. Braden Bishop greeted Wilcox with a two-run single to left field for a 4-0 lead.
Wilcox would retire the next two batters and then toss four more shutout innings of quality relief, but the Pilot bats never came to life.
Portland threatened in the fifth after Bremer was replaced by Will Ballowe. The Pilots put the first two runners on with back-to-back walks and that's when Washington brought on Choate. He promptly struck out the next three batters in the first of three innings of relief.
Jones would close it out with one hit and three strikeouts in the final two innings as UW added insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for the 6-0 final.
Kevin Farley, Brady Kerr and Turner Gill each had hits and reached base twice for the Pilots.
Meggs was the lone Husky with two hits on the day, while Bishop drove in two runs and stole two bases. Shortstop Chris Baker reached base three times and scored two runs as well for UW.
Choate (1-1) earned the win in relief with six strikeouts and one hit in 3.0 innings. Bremer toss four shutout innings of one-hit ball for the no decision. Horak (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his first career start for the Pilots.
Portland will look to bounce back with a three-game homestand at Joe Etzel Field this weekend against the UC Davis Aggies beginning Friday at 2 p.m. The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
