PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland starter Jackson Lockwood worked a solid 8.0 innings, Davis Tominaga registered his first career save and freshman Geoffrey Lee had two RBI doubles as the Pilots cruised past the UC Davis Aggies 5-2 to begin a three-game series at Joe Etzel Field on Friday. The Pilots improve to 3-9, while the Aggies drop to 6-4-1.
Â
Lockwood (1-1) entered the game with a 1.93 ERA and he held the UC Davis bats in-check for most of the game. The junior right-hander scattered eight hits, struck out two and didn't issue a single walk. Lockwood has only walked two batters in 22.0 innings this season.
Â
And the Pilots gave him all the runs he would need with a three-run bottom of the third inning, which broke open a scoreless game. The Pilots totaled three doubles during the inning, courtesy Lee, Tominaga and Kevin Farley. Michael Lucarelli also reached on an infield single and Kevin Wade picked up an RBI on a ground-out.
Â
Trailing 3-0, the Aggies got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Pilots immediately responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. After the first two batters struck out to begin the frame, Cody Lenahan slapped a single up the middle. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch and would come around to score on a line-drive single to center field off the bat of Turner Gill.
Â
Up 4-1, the Pilots added some insurance with Lee's second RBI double of the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
The Aggies manufactured a run in the top of the eighth inning without getting a hit, but that's all the scoring UC Davis would do against Lockwood. Tominaga then pitched a scoreless ninth.
Â
The Pilots also got it done defensively, turning three double plays. The first came at a key moment after the Aggies had scored their first run in the sixth and had a runner on third base with only one out. On a fly ball into foul territory down the left field line, Gill ran a long way to make the catch. He then fired a strike to home plate to cut down Nick Lynch, who had tagged and was trying to score.
Â
Portland turned a 2-6-3 double play to end the top of the seventh and ended the game on a 1-6-3 double play.
Â
UC Davis starter Spencer Koopmans (1-1) takes the loss after allowing all five Portland runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Reliever Blake Peters worked the final inning and a third.
Â
Both teams finished with eight hits and neither team committed an error.
Â
The second game between the Pilots and Aggies is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale on Sunday is also scheduled for 1 p.m.
