PORTLAND, Ore. --- The UC Davis Aggies used a four-run fifth inning to claim a 6-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game played on Saturday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The win sets up the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow after the Pilots won the opener on Friday.
Â
The Aggies (7-4-1) scored the game's first run off of Portland (3-10) starter Kurt Yinger in the top of the second inning, courtesy an RBI double by Evan Eptig.
Â
UC Davis then took control of the game with that four-run fifth, with three of the runs coming with two outs. Nick Lynch drove in the first run with a double, and Tanner Bily added a two-run double to chase Yinger. Spencer Henderson then capped the outburst with a run-scoring single off of reliever Brandon Snyder.
Â
The Aggies added an insurance run in the top of the sixth before the Pilots got one back in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Wade began the frame with a double that just missed leaving the yard in deep center field. Wade then advanced to third on a fly out before trotting home on a ground-out off the bat of Cody Lenahan.
Â
But that's all the offense Portland could manage as the Pilots left nine runners stranded on base. Portland left the bases loaded in the second and the Pilots stranded two base runners in the eighth and ninth innings.
Â
Yinger (0-3) takes the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. He fanned three and was followed by three relievers. Snyder allowed the sixth run and Kody Kuhlman and Adam Wozniak combined to hold the Aggies hitless and scoreless during the final 3.0 innings.
Â
UC Davis starter Orlando Razo improves to 2-1 and the Aggies used two relievers. Razo fanned seven, walked one and yielded the one run on five hits in 6.0 innings.
Â
Wade finished with three of Portland's hits, while Brady Kerr added two. The Aggies held a 9-8 edge in hits and neither team committed an error.
Â
The finale of the three-game series will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
