MORAGA, Calif. --- The Saint Mary's Gaels rallied twice on Saturday afternoon to claim a 10-9 win over the Portland Pilots in 10 innings in a West Coast Conference baseball game at Louis Guisto Field. Portland (5-20, 1-4 WCC) led by six runs at one point and scored a run in the top of the 10th before the Gaels (14-8, 3-2 WCC) rallied for the win.
The Pilots scored the game's first five runs to jump ahead 5-0. In the top of the first, Turner Gill went yard with the bases empty for his league-best fifth home run of the year.
In the fourth, Brady Kerr brought home a run with a single and Davis Tominaga bunted in a run to make it a 3-0 game in Portland's favor. And then in the fifth, the Pilots pushed the lead to five when Cody Lenahan drove a two-run double to deep center field.
The Gaels got a couple of runs back in the fifth in the sixth, but Kevin Wade answered with a three-run blast in the top of the seventh to hand the Pilots an 8-2 lead. Wade's second homer of the season sailed over the right-field fence and scored Eric Sapp and Gill.
Saint Mary's then responded with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within one. Anthony Villa provided most of the offense when he greeted new Portland pitcher Jordan Wilcox with a grand slam.
Now down just a run, Saint Mary's was able to push across a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Villa doubled to left to lead off the frame, advanced to third on a wild pitch and trotted home when Anthony Gonslin singled off of Tominaga, who replaced Wilcox back in the seventh.
It then looked favorable for the Pilots in the 10th when SMC pitcher Billy Oxford balked with the bases loaded, which forced in Jason Rosen with the go-ahead run. But the Pilots left two stranded, and the Gaels answered with two runs in the bottom of the 10th for the walk-off win. After Colin Ferguson tied it with an RBI single, Davis Strong provided the game-winner with a run-scoring single to left.
Tominaga (1-4), who earned the save during yesterday's win, takes the loss after working 3.1 innings. Portland starter Kurt Yinger allowed six runs in 6.1 innings before leaving with the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Gaels used eight pitchers on the day and Gonslin (1-0) gets the win after throwing just a third of an inning.
Wade and Lenahan each finished with three hits for the Pilots, while Ferguson, Villa and Gonslin each had three hits for the Gaels.
The rubber match of the three-game series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
