PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland took an early lead and Cooper Hummel hit his first career home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Pepperdine Waves used a four-run eighth to claim a 9-5 win over the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field on Saturday afternoon. The win gives Pepperdine two straight over the Pilots, with the finale of the three-game series set for Sunday.
Â
Portland's (5-23, 1-7 WCC) Kevin Wade had his second straight game with a pair of hits, and he belted an RBI double to deep left-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. Cody Lenahan followed with a double to the exact same spot, which scored Wade and gave the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
The lead would stand until the top of the sixth inning when the Waves (13-15, 4-4 WCC) capitalized on a Portland error. Following a pair of singles, Brandon Caruso reached base safely and a run scored when the throw to first on Caruso's attempted sacrifice bunt was dropped. A fielder's choice then allowed the tying run to score before Matt Gelalich pushed Pepperdine into the lead with an RBI double. Only two of the runs scored in the inning were earned.
The Waves scored two more in the top of the seventh to make it a 5-2 ballgame. Hutton Moyer led off the inning with a triple to deep center field before scoring on a fielder's choice. Jordan Qsar drove in the second run with a single, and again the Pilots were hurt by an error as only one of the two runs was earned.
Â
Hummel's blast came in the bottom of the frame and pulled the Pilots back into the game. With Dan Whittaker on first following a walk, Hummer hit a hard line drive that quickly cleared the wall in left field and made the score 5-4.
Â
But Pepperdine responded with four runs in the top of the eighth, with three coming on a bases-loaded triple by Moyer, his second triple of the game.
Â
The Pilots did score one in the bottom of the eighth courtesy a triple by Lenahan, but the Waves held on for the win.
Â
Kurt Yinger (0-5) takes the loss after holding the Waves to just two earned runs in 7.0 innings. He surrender 10 hits, while striking out two. All four runs in the top of the eighth came off of reliever Brandon Snyder and Alex Fisher pitched a scoreless ninth.
Â
Pepperdine starter Ryan Wilson (5-0) remains perfect on the year, allowing five hits in 7.2 innings. He fanned seven, walked three and was charged with all five Portland runs. Chandler Blancher worked the final inning and a third.
Â
Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
