PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Kevin Farley hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help force the game to extra innings, but the Pepperdine Waves plated two in the top of the 11th to prevail 3-1 over the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field on Sunday. The long fly is Farley's first this year.
Â
Farley's blast came with the Pilots trailing 1-0 after Portland (5-24, 1-8 WCC) starting pitcher Davis Tominaga did well to limit Pepperdine's (14-15, 5-4 WCC) opportunities for most of the afternoon. With the bases empty and two outs, Farley hit a towering shot that cleared the wall in left field and notched the score 1-1.
Â
An inning later, Cooper Hummel nearly gave the Pilots the lead when he led off the bottom of the eighth with a deep fly ball that missed clearing the left-center fence by about two feet. He ended up on second base with a double, and Eric Sapp advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. Grant Taylor then drew a walk, giving the Pilots runners on the corners with only one out.
Â
But Pepperdine's A.J. Puckett escaped the jam with a strike out and a line out.
Â
The game then moved to extra innings after Sapp's deep fly with two outs in the bottom of the ninth was caught at the warning track in right field.
Â
Tominaga got through the top of the 10th unscathed, but the Waves capitalized in the 11th after Portland had gone to its bullpen. Pepperdine loaded the bases against Jordan Wilcox, and pinch hitter Matt Crowder greeted new pitcher Ryan Barr with a go-ahead RBI single.
Â
Carl Snaring then took over for Barr and walked the first batter he faced to force in another run. The lefty then retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Â
The Pilots went down in order in the bottom of the 11th, handing Pepperdine reliever Max Gamboa (3-1) the win. He worked 3.0 perfect innings. Puckett tossed 8.0 innings and held the Pilots to five hits.
Â
Tominaga yielded just one run on seven hits in 10.0 innings, while Wilcox (1-3) is saddled with the loss.
Â
The Pilots next step out of conference to face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at PK Park.
