PORTLAND, Ore. --- Starter Cole Doherty claims his first career win, reliever Carl Snaring registers his first career save and four different Pilots drove in a run as Portland defeated the Oregon Ducks 6-4 in a non-conference baseball game played at PK Park on Tuesday night. Reliever Jake Hawken was also effective on the mound as the three Portland pitchers combined to record 10 strikeouts, while allowing just four hits.
Â
Doherty (1-2), a junior transfer from Blinn College in Texas, earns his first win in Pilot purple after holding the Ducks to just three runs on four hits in 5.0 innings. He fanned three before Hawken took over to begin the sixth.
Â
The freshman righty continued what Doherty started, holding Oregon (17-12) without a hit in 2.0 innings. He also K'd three and the Ducks' only run against the Vancouver, Wash., native came on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Next came Snaring, a sophomore left-hander who was nearly flawless. He struck out four of the seven batters he faced en route to the save.
Â
Meanwhile the Pilots (6-24) provided all the offense the pitchers would need as Grant Taylor, Cody Lenahan, Brady Kerr and Michael Lucarelli each tallied an RBI. Lucarelli drove in the game's first run in the top of the second after Kevin Farley had doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lucarelli then slapped a liner to right field, allowing Farley to easily score.
Â
An inning later, Lenahan went opposite field with a line drive that scored Taylor and gave the Pilots a 2-0 lead. The Pilots then made it three straight innings with a run when Lucarelli trotted home on a single by Taylor in the top of the fourth.
Â
The Ducks got a pair of runs back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame, but the Pilots responded with three more runs in the top of the fifth. Â Tuner Gill and Wade Kevin Wade hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning, and Gill came around to score on an Oregon error. Kerr then sent a tough-to-handle ball towards short, which was ruled an error and allowed both Wade and Lenahan to score to give the Pilots a 6-2 lead.
Â
Scott Heineman belted Oregon's second home run in the bottom of the fifth, which was a solo shot off Doherty and pulled the Ducks within three.
Â
Portland finished with 10 hits, with Taylor leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance. The Pilots were also solid defensively as both Lenahan at third base and Wade at first made diving plays in key situations.
Â
The win snaps an 11-game losing streak to Oregon for the Pilots, who pick up their first win against their in-state rival since 2011.
Â
Portland now gets a short break before returning to play in the West Coast Conference with a trip to Provo, Utah, to face the BYU Cougars. The first game of the three-game set with the Cougars is scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific) on Thursday night.
