PROVO, Utah --- After the Portland Pilots had scored a run to take the lead in the top of the eighth, the Brigham Young Cougars responded with two in the bottom of the frame to claim a 3-2 comeback win in a West Coast Conference baseball game played on Thursday night at Ralph H. Miller Field. Turner Gill went yard for the Pilots, and starter Billy Sahlinger worked 6.0 solid innings.
Gill's blast, his sixth of the season, came with the bases empty and two outs in the top of the first to hand the Pilots (6-25, 1-10 WCC) an early 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Cougars (13-16, 5-5 WCC) answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Both Sahlinger and BYU starter Kolton Mahoney recovered from there and each would hold the other team scoreless for the next several innings. Portland eventually jumped ahead with a run in the top of the eighth, which came after Cooper Hummel and Gill crew consecutive two-out walks. Kevin Wade followed with an RBI single to put the Pilots back on top.
But as in the first inning, the Cougars responded quickly, this time with two runs off of reliever Brandon Snyder. The tying run scored on a wild pitch, while Jarrett Jarvis brought in the go-ahead run with a ground-out. Dillon Robinson and Colton Shaver had begun the inning with a single and a double to put the Pilots in a jam.
Portland did get the potential tying run one base in the ninth after Cody Lenahan singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and trotted to third on a ground-out. But BYU's Michael Rucker struck out Michael Lucarelli to end the game.
Snyder (0-3), who replaced Sahlinger to begin the seventh inning, takes the loss after getting charged with both runs in the eighth. Reliever Ryan Barr took over for Snyder with one out in the eighth.
Sahlinger's final line included one run on six hits. He struck out three.
Mahoney tossed 8.0 innings, limiting the Pilots to just five hits while striking out a remarkable 15 batters. Rucker registers his third save of the year.
Game two of this three-game series is set for Friday night at 5 p.m. (Pacific).
