LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Portland's West Coast Conference Tournament run came to an end in the semifinals Monday night as the Pilots fell 84-70 to BYU. Portland (17-15) will now accept an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) – the date, location, and opponent will be released when the CIT brackets are announced later this week.
In Monday's late semifinal, the Cougars (25-8) continued their case for NCAA at-large consideration with an offensive clinic in the first half. Junior guard Chase Fischer erupted for 20 points in the half as BYU took a 42-24 lead into the break and the margin would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
Thomas van der Mars led Portland with 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Gabe Taylor added a season-high 14 points – all in the second half – on 7-of-8 shooting. Junior guard Bryce Pressley finished with 12 points.
BYU junior Kyle Collinsworth recorded his sixth triple-double of the season with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. Fischer finished with a game-high 24 points and senior guard Tyler Haws added 18.
It was the final WCC tournament for six Portland seniors: van der Mars, Kevin Bailey, Volodymyr Gerun, Bobby Sharp, David Carr, and Riley Barker. The group helped lead Portland to its fifth WCC semifinal, three of which have come under head coach Eric Reveno.
Portland was able to match the Cougars in the early going as a Pressley jumper tied the game at 9-9, but BYU went on a 27-9 run behind Fischer's shooting that ultimately put the game out of reach.
"There were things we did well, but we were just scrambling for too much," Reveno said. "I was proud of how our guys did, but tonight did not go as we planned."
BYU finished the first half by making 8-of-12 three-pointers and 15-of-26 from the field. Portland, meanwhile, struggled to 30 percent shooting in the period.
Despite committing four less turnovers than the Cougars (17-13), the Pilots were outscored in points off of turnovers by a 22-13 margin.
The Pilots came into the game shooting 39 percent from three-point range, but finished at just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.
BYU will look to extend its eight-game win streak when they face the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Tuesday's WCC title game at 6 p.m.
Portland now awaits details for the CIT, which is a 32-team tournament that features all non-BCS schools. The first rounds will take place March 17-18 at campus sites. Stay tuned to PortlandPilots.com for further details.
