KEIZER, Ore. --- The Oregon State Beavers jumped out to an early lead before defeating the Portland Pilots 20-0 in a non-conference game played on Wednesday night at Volcanoes Stadium. The game was the last non-conference tilt for the Pilots this season.
Â
Portland starter Jordan Wilcox struck out three of the first six batters he faced, but with a runner on first and one out in the top of the second, Kyle Nobach left the yard with a two-run homer. His shot to left gave the Beavers (33-14-1) an early 2-0 lead.
Â
The Pilots (10-41) nearly responded in the bottom of the inning when they got runners on second and third with just one out. But Oregon State's Sam Tweedt was able to get out of the jam with a ground out and a strike out to end the inning.
Â
The Beaver bats then rewarded Tweedt with five runs in the top of the third to take control of the game. Oregon State strung five straight hits together to score the five runs, with most of the damage coming on a two-run single by Billy King. OSU added two more runs an inning later on a two-run homer by Jeff Hendrix and five more would cross the plate in the sixth as the Beavers cruised from there.
Â
Tweedt got all the offensive support he would need to improve to 8-1 on the year. He held the Pilots scoreless on six hits and no walks, while striking out two in 6.0 innings. Relievers Mak Fox, Kevin Flemer and Zack Reser combined to complete the shutout.
Â
Wilcox (1-5) takes the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings. He was followed on the mound by reliever Alex Fisher, who struck out the side in the fifth inning, Jake Hawken, Kody Kuhlman and Ryan Barr.
Â
The Pilots next wrap up the 2015 season on the road when they travel to Stockton, Calif., for a three-game West Coast Conference series with Pacific this weekend. Friday's opener is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
