Portland Pilots women's soccer alum Megan Rapinoe assisted on the first goal and the U.S. Women's National Team rolled to a 5-2 win over Japan in the 2015 World Cup Final on Sunday afternoon in Vancouver, B.C. It's the third World Cup title ever for the U.S.
Â
Rapinoe's assist came in the fourth minute when she drove a low ball from the corner towards the center of the box. That's where teammate Carli Lloyd finished near the penalty spot and the route was on.
Â
This is the second straight World Cup for Rapinoe and it's her first World Cup title.
Â
Rapinoe and the Americans advanced to the final after defeating Germany 2-0 in a semifinal match played on Tuesday, June 30 in Montreal. The U.S. previously defeated China and Colombia after claiming their group. Rapinoe also picked up an assist during a win over Australia.
Â
Meanwhile the host Canadians suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to England in the quarterfinals on Saturday, June 27. Canada fell behind 2-0 early before Portland alum and star striker Christine Sinclair pulled one back with a goal just before the half. But that's as close as Team Canada would get as England prevailed, ending the World Cup for Sinclair and fellow UP alum Sophie Schmidt.
Like the Americans, the Canadians also previously won their group to advance to the knock-out rounds.Â
This is the fifth straight women's world cup that the University of Portland has multiple alums representing their country on soccer's biggest stage. This is the fourth straight world cup for Sinclair, the third straight for Schmidt and the second for Rapinoe.
